Touch ID (fingerprint authentication function) will be restored on "iPhone 14

The “iPhone 14 (provisional)” is expected to be announced in September or October of 2022. There is already a lot of information floating around on the internet. Of course, Apple does not officially acknowledge such information, so everything is only predictions and speculations, but some information that seems to be highly accurate has come out. Some people may be wondering if the iPhone 14 (provisional) series will have Touch ID.

Touch ID

Touch ID is Apple's fingerprint authentication system. Touch ID, which was first adopted in the iPhone 5s released in 2013, is installed in all models up to the iPhone 8 series in 2017, and Touch ID installed in the home button at the bottom of the display is a visual feature of iPhone. It was also a symbol.

However, the iPhone X, which was announced at the same time as the iPhone 8, has a full-screen display, and the Touch ID is abolished along with the home button. Instead, it has Face ID, a facial recognition system. Since then, except for the iPhone SE series, iPhones have no Touch ID.

Face ID has high recognition accuracy and is superior in terms of security compared to Touch ID, but you have to look at the screen (camera) when authenticating, so you can use the screen to unlock the iPhone placed on the desk. The difficulty is that it takes time to look into it and pick it up. In addition, it is now possible to authenticate with Face ID even while wearing a mask, but since masks became mandatory in Japan during the hay fever season and due to the new coronavirus infection, there are calls for Touch ID. It was getting bigger.

By the way, even if it is equipped with Touch ID, and iPhone I don't think there are many people who imagine that it will be installed at the bottom of the front like the SE.

 Fingerprint Sensor

At present, the most likely possibility is to install it in the display that major manufacturers have already adopted, such as the Pixel and Galaxy series on Android. I have the impression that Apple is good at brushing up on mature technology to some extent rather than adopting new technology quickly.

The in-display fingerprint sensor first adopted by Vivo in China in 2018 has already been around for more than four years, and it may be time for Apple to adopt it. In fact, there have been rumors that Apple will adopt in-display fingerprint authentication for the next iPhone, and Apple itself has applied for a patent for an optical fingerprint sensor built into the display in 2020. Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst familiar with Apple's information, also predicted that in 2023, the company would adopt Touch ID built into the display.

However, it now claims that the 2023 and 2024 iPhones won't have an in-display Touch ID. Another possibility is to install Touch ID on the power key, just like the iPad mini 6. Some people say that the in-display fingerprint sensor is "slow to recognize" or "not recognized", but it seems that there will be no problems if it is installed on the power key.

By the way, Apple's in-display fingerprint sensor patent mentioned above proposes a new method to solve such recognition accuracy problems. Unfortunately, there is no convincing information that the iPhone 14 (provisional) series will be equipped with a power key type Touch ID. After all, the iPhone 14 (provisional) is unlikely to have Touch ID, and if it's as Ming-Chi Kuo predicts, we'll see an iPhone in 2025 at the earliest. It seems that it is necessary to wait until 16 (provisional). By then, I'd like to think that wearing a mask on a daily basis will no longer be necessary, but if that happens, the demand for the revival of Touch ID will fade away, and I just hope that it won't be postponed in the end.

iPhone SE Serie

Except for the iPhone SE series, iPhones do not have Touch ID. Face ID has high recognition accuracy and is superior in terms of security compared to Touch ID, but you have to look at the screen (camera) when authenticating, so you can use the screen to unlock the iPhone placed on the desk.

iPhone Maps app may get ads in 2023

Until now, there were no ads in Apple's official apps (outside of the App Store), but there are rumors that search ads will be added to the iPhone Maps app from 2023.
Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, an Apple insider, said in the latest issue of the Power On newsletter, "I have engineering work already underway to launch search ads in Apple's Maps app, and sometime next year.

I believe it will be implemented at some point." Advertisements in map apps are not banner advertisements that are often seen on websites, but search advertisements that appear when you google, that is, "displayed in conjunction with the search results of search engines". For example, if you search for "hamburger" or "french fries" in a map app, a certain fast food chain that paid for advertising will be displayed near the top.
These ads have been placed in similar apps like Google Maps and Waze, so it wouldn't surprise me if Apple followed suit.

Apple has already introduced search ads in the App Store, allowing app developers to pay for advertising to promote their apps. Going one step further, it is rumored that ads will be displayed on the App Store's initial screen "Today" and under the product page of each app. Gurman said last week that Apple was aiming to grow annual advertising revenue from $4 billion to "double digits," or nearly triple it.

Towards that ambition, we are finally starting to move in earnest. Until now, Apple has touted privacy as a top priority and has restricted other companies, such as Meta, from collecting personal information.
However, in the company's advertising system, you can target as much as you want using data from your Apple ID (although you can turn off [Apple ads] from [Privacy] in the Settings app), and criticism may increase in the future. Hmm.
