How to create unlimited email addresses with one Gmail account

When you live with your partner, you will inevitably sign up for two memberships or accounts. This includes theater pair memberships and health insurance that covers both parties. Unfortunately, many of these memberships only let you register with one email address. Instead of creating a third email account and adding new forwarding rules each time you sign up, use Gmail to your advantage. Just set it once and you will be free from annoyance.

Gmail allows one email address to be multiple

Lifehacker reader Trippple shows you how to use the "+" in your Gmail email address. In Gmail, you can create multiple email addresses by attaching a character string starting with "+" to your email address. For example, let's say you have an email address "bert@gmail.com". If you add + to this, you can create an unlimited number of email addresses. bert+work@gmail.com bert+newsletters@gmail.com These two mean the same email address as "bert@gmail.com" (whether you're using your own domain or your organization's domain for Gmail. can be used). And you don't even need to create a new account. The main body is one, and the others are like alter egos. In other words, Mr. Bert should create an e-mail address "bert+ernie@gmail.com" register with various services, and set Gmail to forward the e-mails received here to Ernie. When you apply for a shared account, you have to set up a forwarding email address in Gmail and apply a filter, but once you set it up, you don't need to do anything more. Just use that special email address when you sign up for a shared account.

1. Set a forwarding email address

First, you must assign your partner's e-mail address as a forwarding e-mail address (this prevents spam). Click the gear icon in the upper right to open Settings. Click the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab. In the Forwarding section, click Add forwarding address. Enter your partner's email address and click "Next" → "Continue" → "OK".

Gmail will send a verification code to the partner. Enter that code in the "Verification code" field in Gmail and click "Verify".

2. Set filters for shared email addresses

Next, set up Gmail to forward all specific emails to your partner. Open Gmail's Settings (click the gear icon in the top right). Click Filters and Blocked Addresses. Click "Create a new filter" below. A window with a drop-down list will appear. In the "To" section, enter the shared email address (e.g. bert+ernie@gmail.com) and click "Create filter". A new window with a drop-down list will appear. Click Forward to and select your partner's email address from the drop-down list. Click Create Filter.

Use this special email address when applying for a shared account

Now the email is sent to Bert and Gmail automatically forwards it to Erin. Also, Erin doesn't need to have a Gmail account to use this feature. This is helpful. ──The article on August 22, 2019, has been re-edited and reposted. Translated by Mishiko Asano/Galileo
